In a poll conducted by House & Garden magazine of the nation's top interior designers, the Plainville, Kansas firm, Dessin Fournir, was voted as one of the top three design and manufacturing firms of furniture to the trade. Dessin Fournir is the only one located on the plains of Kansas, home of their leader Chuck Comeau.
The Dessin Fournir Companies began 15 years ago in the basement of an oil company as a vision of Chuck Comeau who wanted to pursue his life-long passion for exquisitely designed, beautifully crafted high-fashion home furnishings.
The award-winning company targets the high-end residential and contract markets. An interior design industry powerhouse has evolved into six companies that design and manufacture furniture, fabrics and lighting. Their products are represented in 14 major metropolitan markets throughout the United States and Canada. Recently the Dessin Fournir Companies opened their own showrooms in Chicago and New York. The companies work with 14 mills in Europe and their manufacturing facility in Los Angeles.
Chuck Comeau's rural development efforts in Kansas encompass the renowned Dessin Fournir Companies, C.S. Post & Co., a nationally recognized retail concept store and web site; Liberty Group, Inc., a downtown development corporation; and Gella's Diner & Lb. Brewing Co.
What makes this business so important to Plainville is that the success of it does not depend upon the local economy for support. But, the dollars the company generates are then infused back into the local economy through payroll, purchases from local merchants and charitable contributions and support of school and community activities.
The best place to get close to the design and elegance of the Dessin Fournir Companies is at the C.S. Post & Co. located in the Chestnut Street District in downtown Hays.
Just as the 'general store' was a post for pioneers on the western frontier, C.S. Post & Co. set out to be the beacon for consumers on the new digital frontier. Offering its own 'traditional-with-a-twist' furniture, accessories, and special-but-everyday products including garden and floral, this retail shop has made some Dessin Fournir Companies products available to walk-in customers.
Chuck and his wife Shirley also own Pineapple Post in Plainville at 111 N. Jefferson. The store does not showcase furniture but does carry a variety of unique kitchen and bath products, candles, soaps and body powders, picture frames and mirrors, plants and garden accessories, cookware and a wide array of rings, necklaces and bracelets.
