Marci and WenDee went on a journey called ERV
(Explorer Research Voyage in the Explorer Research Vehicle)
THE ERV PLAN
- The Kansas Sampler Foundation's Marci Penner and WenDee LaPlant went to every one of the 626 incorporated cities in Kansas to research for the second edition of the Kansas Guidebook for Explorers. The guidebook estimated publication date is May 2017.
- The trip started June 12, 2012 and finished November of 2015.
- Currently we are writing the guidebook. Not every town will be in the book but we took a look at each town. The book will be approximately 432-pages with about 4,000 entries and 500+ pictures.
- See pictures of where we went or see if you might know some answers to research questions on the ERV Facebook page.
The research, guidebook, and education of Kansans is one of the projects of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, an Inman-based non-profit. The KSF mission is to preserve and sustain rural culture. Other projects include the Kansas Sampler Festival, the Kansas Explorers Club, the 8 Wonders of Kansas contests and guidebook, the PowerUp Movement, the Big Rural Brainstorm, the We Kan! Conference, Rural Kansas: Come & Get It, more. The Foundation was co-founded by the late Mil Penner and daughter, Marci, in 1993.
THE KANSAS GUIDEBOOK FOR EXPLORERS (published 2005)
(The new book will have a similar format)
There were 432-pages in this 2005 coil-bound book printed by Mennonite Press, Newton. Within a couple of years, 22,000 copies sold. We decided not to reprint due to a good number of business closures. Five-hundred of the 627 incorporated cities in Kansas were represented in the book. The "ERV” trip will lead to the next edition. The publisher was and will be the Kansas Sampler Foundation.
