The Happening!

THE 2010 HAPPENING in Crawford County!
Saturday, July 10

Headquarter at the
Franklin Community Center, 1:30 on Saturday

THE HAPPENING IS A VERY FUN DAY!

Sidewalk chalk, Explorer flags, Explorer gear and buttons, cameras... these are just a few of the things you'll see plenty of on Saturday, July 10 for the final Happening!

Sidewalk chalk? Yes! We're going to the home of the longest sidewalk between two cities--Franklin and Arma! And, wouldn't it be fun to write on the sidewalk, or create a hopscotch board? Our Happening headquarters will be the Franklin Community Center & Heritage Museum in the unincorporated village of Franklin, located right beside the sidewalk.

THE STRUCTURE PART OF THE DAY

The only structured part of the Happening is the 1:30 p.m. meeting which will take place in the Franklin Community Center. We'll meet then for refreshment and Jay will lead us in a fun discussion about our day. You'll also be able to view and/or buy new Explorer merchandise and pick up your annual button!

THE REST OF THE DAY

KE #108 Jay Yoder and KE #15 Jim Gray created the Happening as a simple way to get Explorers together without having to do a lot of planning.

So, all Explorers, friends and family, or people curious in becoming an Explorer, are invited to just come together on one day and "do" the area. There are no group tours, there is no formal exploring agenda, there is no time to be anywhere, except for the 1:30 p.m. meeting. Just explore as you wish, where you wish!

If you can, put something on your car to let people know you're an Explorer or wear Explorer gear or buttons. On page two and three in this newsletter there are suggestions of things to see and do in the area. Or, you can spend most of the day exploring from your home to Franklin. It doesn't matter. Just explore!

WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT FRANKLIN?

Franklin is an unincorporated town located five miles north of Frontenac on U.S. 69. The small town took a direct hit from the 2003 tornado -- the one that caused an early end to the Kansas Sampler Festival in Independence. Just beyond the community center is a garden that relates the story of the tornado. Metal is still wrapped around a pecan tree.

LET'S BRING THINGS TO FRANKLIN!

Let's shower the community center with cleaning supplies, toilet paper, dishwashing liquid, stamps from small post offices, etc. Thanks, Explorers!

SEE YOU THERE!

Questions that day? Call WenDee at 620.937.2101.

This will be the last Happening as we've now had one in every region. Previous stops have been in Marquette, Lucas, Westmoreland, Leoti, and Wallace.

E-mail marci@kansassampler.org for information about what there is to see and do in the area!

"THE HAPPENING"was in Wallace!

July 11, 2009

About eleven of us met at the Clark-Robidoux House, an 1880s historic home in Wallace and were treated to a tour and snacks by Bud and Glenda Allaman.  We had all bought stamps or cleaning supplies along the way and presented them to Bud and Glenda.

WHERE IS WALLACE?
Wallace is a town of 64, located 9 miles east of Sharon Springs, the county seat of Wallace County. The county borders Colorado.

Things to see and do in the county include:

  • Mount Sunflower
  • Fort Wallace Museum, U.S. 40 just east of Wallace
  • Fort Wallace Cemetery
  • Clark-Robidoux House, northwest corner of Wallace
  • Section House, southwest side of Wallace
  • Scenic back roads
  • Wallace County Courthouse, Sharon Springs
  • The General Store, 212 N. Main, Sharon Springs
  • Stevens Restaurant, K-27 & U.S. 40, Sharon Springs
  • Penny's Diner & Oak Tree Inn, K-27 & U.S. 40
  • Mount Sunflower B&B, Sharon Springs, 785.852.4004

WHAT IS "THE HAPPENING"?

KE #108 Jay Yoder is the mastermind behind the Explorer Happening. It's designed to be an easy event for all involved and for things to simply "happen." When a host of Explorers shows up to "do" an area, you never know what will take place. The locals loved our company.

The Happening gave us a reason to explore Wallace County.  Some of us even got a rare tour of Hell's Half Acre!

2008 HAPPENING in LEOTI!

A great time was had by 32 Kansas Explorer Club members in Leoti on July 5. Prior to the pot luck and official kick-off of the event, explorers had already spent $2,920 on their way to and in and around Leoti!

Leoti rolled out the red carpet for us and had welcome signs and a welcome center. Some things we enjoyed were the community hamburger feed, the Ranch Rodeo, the fireworks, hearing about and seeing the home-owned amusement rides for their county fair, Leonard Mullen's leather shop, the horseshoe forge, the courthouse, the Museum of the Great Plains, many shops, garage sales, sidewalk sales, and the old Methodist Church. Some stayed in the local motel, others camped. Some rode bicycles around town. We were treated so well by the Leotians!

The remaining three regions of the state were placed in a hat and the region selected for next year's Happening was northwest Kansas! Put July 11, 2009 on your calendar for next year's Happening!

The C.A.R.E. Center in Leoti served as the Explorer Welcome Center where explorers enjoyed homemade cinnamon rolls and coffee when they arrived.

The 2007 Happening was in Westmoreland
The 2006 Happening was in Lucas.
The first Happening took place in 2005 in Marquette.

HAPPENING PHOTOS 2008

Karen Walk with the Museum of the Great Plains hosted the Happening potluck
at the museum along with Economic Developer Sharla Krenzel.

"Thrills for a quarter only in Leoti" - Happening instigator, Jay Yoder of Partridge also comes up with the Happening shirt slogan and design.  This year it was based on Leoti's wonderful community owned carnival that will never up it's price of 25 cent rides.

Bonnie Danley and her granddaughter, Elizabeth Brown, had lots of fun at the Happening especially Elizabeth who won the gift basket generously filled with donated items from Wichita County businesses.

Explorers listen while horse shoers and forgers discuss how they make horse shoes at the Double Bar One in Leoti.

At the boot & saddle repair shop Explorers were greeted by long time owners Leonard Mullen and his delightful wife, Sharon.  It was rumored that some dancing in borrowed boots went on during a visit!
