HOW TO SET UP FACEBOOK, GMAIL, GOOGLE, ETC.
EVERYONE ENROLLED IN A RURAL KANSAS CLASS IS REQUESTED to set up the Social Networking accounts prior to attending class.
Below are links to good website with instructions on how to set up your social networking tools including Facebook, Twitter and Google. WE WILL NOT BE TEACHING TWITTER OR BLOGGING IN THE 2010 and LATER CLASSES BUT YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO SET UP A TWITTER ACCOUNT ON BEHALF OF YOUR COMMUNITY.

FACEBOOK - www.facebook.com
IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A PERSONAL FACEBOOK ACCOUNT YOU NEED NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE. You will set up a page for your community during class from your personal page during class but it will not be using your personal information.
The name of your Facebook page will be Get ___________(name of your town)
Set up your Facebook page using your name. You do not need to add any personal information. During the class we will take you through the steps of setting up a page for your community.

You will create your Twitter page using the name Get______(name of your town); for example "GetMcPherson"

GMAIL ACCOUNT - Please read the following before creating your google email account called "gmail."
Your first name will be NAME OF YOUR TOWN
Your last name will be KANSAS
Please name your gmail account "Get(Name of town).gmail.com NOTE: If Get(Name of your town) is already taken, please add either KS or Kansas and check again for availability. If not available please contact firstname.lastname@example.org before proceeding.
USER NAME SHOULD ALSO BE "GET(Name of town)" GetInman - example
and the PASSWORD AND QUESTION SHOULD RELATE TO YOUR COMMUNITY. The reason for this? Because you will not always be the one in charge of updating the website (we see these pages lasting for eternity!) the Username, Password and Security Question should relate to the city you set it up for. Be sure and write down and keep in a safe place this information!

GOOGLE ACCOUNT - this account should also be named for your community and start with the word "GET". For example your "First" name will be GetMcPherson and your last name will be "Kansas". All information above applies for this account as well.
You will use the account to create your Get(community name) Blog, access your gmail and use Picasa3.

PICASA - this is another Google product that is simply amazing and best of all FREE! The person who wrote this instruction page is as enthusiastic as I am about Picasa. The instruction info starts a little down on the page so you may have to scroll down a bit after opening the website.

We will be using it in class to resize and crop photos for your webpages. It does not require you to download or register. You simply go to the website and follow the prompts. You will be amazed at how easy and fun it is to use. However, you must have your Adobe Flash updated on your computer for it to work. You will be prompted to do that automatically after opening the website. It will be a free download.
YOU TUBE ACCOUNT
In order to have your Picasa slideshow appear on your community home page you will upload it to YouTube after you've created it on Picasa.
If you have time, it would be good to have your YouTube account created before you come to class so you can see how it actually works and looks as a Welcome Video. You will use your new Google Account information to create an account. When you open www.youtube.com you will see a link at the top right part of the page called CREATE ACCOUNT. Please choose that link and continue from there using your new Gmail account info. If you have problems we can visit about in class or by phone either before or after you attend the class.
Depending on the class we may or may not have time to get this done but we will provide you with written instructions on how to create a slideshow and have it appear on your community page.
